When to come (season & crowds)
Purpose: Pick dates confidently for your favourite activities.
Best windows by activity:
Bike parks / downhill & enduro: late May–October (peak flow: July–September).
Canyoning / rafting: June–August (snowmelt = higher water in early summer; mid–late summer = warmer water, steadier flows).
Via ferrata / high routes: June–October (avoid early snow patches in June at higher altitudes; September is quiet and crisp).
Typical temps: valley 20–28°C summer highs; 12–18°C at 1,800–2,200 m.
Lift ops: daily in high season; shoulder weeks may be Fri–Sun.
Busy vs. quiet: school holidays (mid-July–late Aug) are lively; June & September are quieter with excellent conditions.
Snippet: For maximum flow and long days, choose July–August. For fewer crowds and crisp air, June or September are perfect.
Where to base yourself (pick your hub)
Bad Gastein / Bad Hofgastein – Spa culture + high trails. Big-view balcony paths from Stubnerkogel and Graukogel; perfect for couples or mixed-ability groups who want sauna/thermal evenings. (Suspension bridge = wow-moment.)
Wagrain-Kleinarl – Ultra family-friendly valley loops and lift-assisted viewpoints; good signage, playground stops, lakes/streams for kid breaks; easy logistics from St. Johann.
Fieberbrunn (PillerseTal) – Pine-scented forest trails and peak circuits; excellent for e-bike + hike combos around Streuböden/Timok’s. PillerseTal Card simplifies lift access across the region.
Signature ideas per resort (taster distances/ascent):
Gastein: Balcony loop from Stubnerkogel top (8–10 km, 350–500 m+); Graukogel larch trail (5–7 km, 250–350 m+).
Wagrain-Kleinarl: Family meadow/lake loop (4–6 km, <300 m+); lift-top panorama path (8–10 km, ~400 m+).

With kids & with dog (micro-guides)
With kids
Target 2–4 h outings with play stops (streams, meadows, playgrounds). Wagrain-Kleinarl shines for family facilities and lift-assisted viewpoints; many huts welcome children and take card/cash. Time lunch 11:30–12:30 to avoid queues.
Fieberbrunn’s Timok area adds fun features near the trail—great for motivation mid-loop.
With dog
Gastein & Wagrain lifts generally allow dogs on leads; check on-the-day signage and cabin rules.
Fieberbrunn’s wide plateau paths are ideal; keep a leash near grazing animals and carry water/collapsible bowl. Remember to
Family tip: Pack a tiny “last-kilometer reward” and plan a hut stop around halfway.
Dog tip: Choose shaded forest loops on warmer afternoons (Fieberbrunn & Wagrain have plenty).

Fieberbrunn: rail stop in town (regional connections via Hochfilzen/St. Johann in Tirol); fast road links to Salzburg/Tyrol.
Katschberg: best via car/transfer from Radstadt or Spittal rail hubs; the resort sits on a high pass with on-plateau trailheads.
